EXHIBITION DETAILS

Taking place at the Kronprinzenpalais [Crown Prince Palace] on the boulevard – Unter den Linden– it marked the largest exhibition of Gianni Versace originals to date and was the perfect venue to emphasise his unique and extraordinary style.

Gianni Versace Retrospective enclosed more than 500 original pieces from private collectors around the world, ranging from sketches and videos to accessories and dresses. Including many unique pieces that were created only for the catwalk and the supermodels Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista, Kate Moss, as well as celebrities such as Elton John, Lady Di and Sting, give an intense impression of Gianni Versace's working method and the development of his design, often with unexpected facets of his work. Gianni Versace was an Italian Designer but his ties with Germany go way back to the story of his career. His very first show took place in 1978 in Lippstadt, North Rhine-Westphalia after being invited by the legendary retailer Albert Eickhoff. In 1994 Gianni Versace’s last exhibition "Signature" which he personally curated and opened took place at the Kunstgewerbemuseum [Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts]. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the launch of his brand Gianni Versace we decided to showcase some of his most beautiful and treasured works again in Berlin. A city he promised to come back.

"I love men who have the courage to become heroes." – Gianni Versace

Gianni Versace was the first international designer to reflect the gender discussion in his men fashion: between strong masculine forms and resolution of aesthetically standards of sexes.

True beauty was for Gianni Versace the naked body. In Versace's 1995 book Men Without Ties Richard Martin wrote: "Men, as well as women, have long been victims of fashion." It is no coincidence that Gianni Versace's books and catalogues contain numerous depictions of naked or half-naked bodies. They also picture conspicuously many men. Gianni saw the male body as the battlefield of modern gender roles. His mission was to create a completely new conception of men and their right to sensuality, which in his eyes was granted primarily to women. Fashion had to play around and with the body to liberate both genders. This aspiration can be seen in one of his core garments; the open buttonless shirt, which lets the chest breathe freely. The Oroton fabric can also be seen as a symbol of this strive, with the fluid metal property that caresses and accentuates the body.
