EXHIBITION DETAILS

What a setting to celebrate Gianni Versace and showcase his fashion. The former Bishop’s Palace in Málaga captivates with its magnificent Baroque façade, while its interior evokes the architectural style once carried by the Spanish to the New World. Instantly, memories surface of Gianni Versace’s Casa Casuarina — his cherished palace beneath the palm trees. The exhibition in Málaga was conceived around these natural correspondences.

The presentation featured 125 looks, organized into eight thematic groups: South Beach, Magna Graecia, Barocco, Pop Art, Super Models, Simply Beautiful, Punk, and Bondage. For the first time, Gianni Versace’s Milan studio was brought back to life with original fabrics, accessories, design drawings, and photographs. The looks and interior design from his Miami Collection created a particularly emotional experience through their direct visual dialogue with the museum’s subtropical garden.

The immersive Barocco room emerged as one of the exhibition’s highlights, enveloping visitors in Versace’s signature world of opulence and symmetry. Comprehensive insights into his life and prolific creative work were provided throughout, while numerous videos animated the atmosphere with energy and movement. A special highlight was the presentation of never-before-seen original photographs by Paolo Castaldi — intimate backstage moments capturing the supermodels of the early 1990s at the height of Versace’s fashion revolution.

Gianni Versace’s design process was a never-ending pursuit of perfection, rooted in collaboration, iteration, and meticulous attention to detail. At his Milan headquarters, a dynamic creative workflow unfolded through sketches, fabric samples, annotated faxes, and tactile materials, all reflecting his hands-on approach and evolving vision.

This process was closely intertwined with ALIAS, Versace’s factory in Novara, where expert artisans translated around 80% of runway designs into reality. ALIAS exemplified Italian craftsmanship, innovation, and precision. At the Milan atelier, Mrs. Franca Biagini, the head seamstress, played a vital role in upholding Versace’s standards, earning his deep admiration.

Together, these creative hubs embodied the essence of Versace’s legacy: fashion as a living, ever-evolving art form powered by passion, precision, and collaboration.

Opening Party

As early as January 2025, the spotlight was on the upcoming Gianni Versace Retrospective in Málaga. The impressive Italian Embassy building in Madrid provided the setting for the first press conference, which was attended by all the major media outlets in Spain. It was the Italian ambassador himself who presented the exhibition. The official opening a few weeks later in Málaga itself became a major event, heavily influenced by national, regional, and local politics, with several hundred invited guests from Spain and abroad. The significance of this cultural event was reflected on all the front pages the following day. Those who still had the energy to party after the official opening were taken by bus to a venue overlooking the city, where the celebrations continued until the early hours.
