Gianni Versace Retrospective

Complete 90s chronology
Spread over three floors, visitors can explore an intimate exhibition organized around four specific themes. The Gianni Temple (ground floor) is the link to Poland, also a strictly Catholic country, and in particular to Poznań with its baroque churches. His signature "Barocco" print is celebrated here in a sprawling form. The last floor debuts two looks per season of the '90s for a stunning take on Gianni's diversity.

Exhibitions Details

The impressive building of the backyard gallery, where the fifth edition of the Gianni Versace Retrospective takes place, is part of the award-winning Stary Browar (Old Brewery) complex, a huge center with over 200 shops, restaurants and offices in the heart of Poznań. The exhibition is taking place on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the opening of Stary Browar in 2003. The gallery building comprises three floors that clearly structure the exhibition. On the ground floor the visitor is immersed in Gianni Versace's "Barocco". This aesthetic creates a bridge to Poznan's baroque tradition. On the first floor we address Gianni Versace's aesthetic borrowings from the subculture of New York clubs and Miami Beach. On the upper floor we are showing two looks from each of Gianni Versace's collections from the 90s for the first time. The optimal spatial structure of the three floors allows visitors to focus on one of the topics. Additional information, especially the texts, are kept minimalistic and underline the impressive simplicity of the brick architecture.

Safety Pin in the focus - the Punk Show,
Dresses are made of tie-dye wrinkled silk satin, machine-made lace and the safety pins of gold-/silver tone metal and glass stones (Swarovski).

Artificial Wrinkling, Gianni Versace used this method already in his mens linen fashion 1986. Eight years later he applied it to satins and velvets, which do not wrinkle by nature easily like linen.

"(His) romanticism... was also a bit CAMP and a bit PUNK." – Minnie Gastel

Both items have never been before on display.

"In fashion however, one must keep going forward, one must have the courage to do something new."  – Gianni Versace

Gianni Versace surprised the press and customers with every new collection like no other fashion designer of his time. He didn't want to stand still. He wanted to incorporate social developments and trends in his collections and thus offer a new, exciting spectacle every season. We are showing Gianni Versace's approach on fashion for the first time on the third floor of the exhibition with two looks from each of the 16 seasons: from spring/summer 1990 to autumn/winter 1997/1998. Perhaps Gianni Versace's desire for rapid change in fashion was never before shown as clear as in these 32 looks, presented in chronological order. From the pieces at the beginning of the decade that were still influenced by the ideas of the 80s, to his bold phase with the "Freedom Show", his echoes of subcultures with "Bondage" and "Punk", to a new minimalism towards the end of his life, which made Lady Diana, for example, a loyal customer. These 32 looks from 16 seasons are complemented by the complete list of catalogs belonging to each collection. The third level of the exhibition is an impressive testimony to fashion and contemporary history.

Opening Party
20th anniversary of Stary Browar

Opening Party

The opening of the Gianni Versace Retrospective on September 1, 2023 was also the main event for the 20th anniversary of Stary Browar. The big outdoor party in bright late summer weather became the party of the year in Poznań. The 500 invited guests had the opportunity to visit the exhibition at 7 pm and were welcomed by the managing director of Stary Browar Magdalena Kowalak, the gallery curator Wojciech Piotr Onak and Dreamrealizer (Saskia Lubnow and Karl von der Ahé) as exhibition curators. One of the highlights of the hour-long program of live music and dancing was the Salt Bae performance of the Turkish butcher Nusret Gökce (nusr_et 53.1M), who was present at the invitation of restaurant and catering partner Whiskey in the Jar, which was celebrating its 10th anniversary. Enough reasons to party until the wee hours.
